Heeding inspiration from both the name and characteristics of Hindu goddess Kālī, whose name in Sanskrit translates to “she who is black” or “she who is death,” 25-year-old dubstep producer and DJ Morgan Susalka, a.k.a Kālī, aims to manifest her own sonic interpretation of the goddess through the nature of her undeniably dark and alluring musical personality. As ancient Hindu texts convey, Kālī has the capacity to guide others to transform their lives by embracing their own darkness, rather than fleeing from or fearing it. Similarly, Kālī’s music, which may appear fearsome and deranged to some, stands rather as an open invitation for listeners to acknowledge and accept the personal darkness within themselves, as a part of themselves, instead of struggling to escape or deny it. Whether she’s creating infectiously dark and bass heavy productions of her own or passionately weaving together fresh, thoughtful selections of some of underground dubstep’s weightiest tunes during her live sets and DJ mixes, Kālī always strives to celebrate and showcase the twisted beauty of her unique personal darkness in hopes of encouraging her listeners to do the same.
